The Annals of the ACJS: A Proposal/Discussion for a New Online Publication of the ACJS
The Annals would be a compilation of papers presented at the annual meetings of the ACJS in the form of “executive summaries” from 600 to 1,200 words. Executive summaries are short written accounts that give an overview of the main points of a longer research paper, report, etc. Submissions would be voluntary. Sample purposes: 1) to save time doing research; 2) to give the writer(s) of the paper an opportunity to clarify and improve their work; 3) to help set agendas for future research; and 4) to encourage networking among students, faculty, and practitioners.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: Teaching the Justice System with Misinformation and Political Divide
Imagine half the class wants to be police officers. How do you discuss a recent media report of an officer-involved shooting and criminal charges against the officer? Instructors must discuss these topics, but how do you effectively teach the justice system without alienating students? This is a panel discussion regarding the balancing of teaching all aspects of the criminal justice system in a world where officer-involved shootings, corrections failures, and legal exonerations are reported widely in the media. This panel discussion will provide techniques and methods to maintain student interest, student engagement, and positive discourse.

Issues Affecting Adjunct/Contingent Criminal Justice Faculty
Adjunct/contingent faculty comprise a majority, over 70 percent, of all higher education faculty. They are a critical and essential force for learning. Adjuncts frequently possess the same teaching credentials, and teach alongside tenure-track faculty. They teach, and possibly perform other academic duties, without the benefits that tenure-track faculty are given, including: job security, paid livable wages, access to employer healthcare, and a robust retirement plan. These adjunct lifestyle considerations and other related issues (e.g., the pandemic, long commutes) will be discussed as well as their occupation’s long-time impact on the development of the criminal justice discipline.

Healthy Boundary Setting for Mid-Career Academics: Scenario-Based Discussion
Academics are tasked with a variety of assignments and roles during their professional career. At each stage of a career, there are pressures for tenure and promotion. This round table will specifically focus on the mid-career academic (10 plus years of service) and how to develop appropriate healthy boundaries in one’s career to ensure that quality of teaching, service, and scholarship can be achieved. Each panelist will discuss different scenarios in which mid-career professionals are faced with making critical decisions on what to take on and what to say no to.

Cover Letters, Interviews, and TMI: How Much Is Too Much?
The job search and interview process have distinctive features and functions. However, from an applicant’s perspective, preparing for the search and interview may be daunting. Whether the candidate is an ABD or lateral moving faculty, it may be hard to communicate who you are and what distinguishes you without sharing too much information (i.e., conveying what inspired an area of expertise without blurring personal/professional lines). Given industry standards in DEI and new instructional legislation, search committees and applicants may encounter challenges navigating this process. This panel shares lessons learned and attempts to get ahead of future directions for academic searches.

Teaching Scholarly Writing and Communication to Doctoral Students
Effective communication is an essential academic skill. Scholars must write and publish, respond to/prepare peer reviews, and develop reports. They also have to teach, lecture, and present at professional conferences. Academic presentation options have grown, and now include traditional talks, roundtable discussions, and posters. Scholarly communication requires the effective use of both writing and images – pictures, slides, photographs, diagrams, graphs, maps, and charts. This wide range of options also requires a broader range of skills. Doctoral students may struggle with writing and presentation challenges. This roundtable discusses approaches to help graduate students learn and develop relevant modern communication skills.

Mentoring Relationships in Academia: Reflections on engaging and mentoring students and junior faculty
Mentorship is a vital component of academic and professional development. Nonetheless, academic institutions and organizations can neglect to meet their mentees’ needs due to factors such as mentor fatigue and lack of mentor training or programs. The Academy of Criminal Justice Science provides a mentorship program, hosts faculty development workshops, and recognizes stellar mentors through awards. Its efforts are designed to encourage optimal mentor-mentee relationships. The discussion will focus on four areas: 1. Importance of academic mentoring, 2. Essential characteristics of mentoring, 3. Mentoring strategies for undergraduate and graduate students, and 4. Benefits of mentoring. Participant experiences will be highlighted.

American True Crime: An Academic’s Guide
The true crime industry in America is a large, thriving, and growing business introducing the interested public to all "things" criminal justice. From television shows, to movies, to specialized "true crime conferences" and ocean cruises, and to a burgeoning podcast industry, the public is being exposed to all facets of the criminal justice system basically in 24/7 fashion. This roundtable participants discusses how fast the industry is growing, it's reach, and how the criminal justice academic community can incorporate such "live" or "hands on" material into criminal justice curriculums and where this industry is headed.

From Practitioner to Scholar - The Path Taken and Unique Perspectives Brought to Academia
There is no easy and simple guidebook for someone seeking to transition from employment in the criminal justice system to the world of academia. For those who have successfully made this transition, the paths taken are as varied as the individuals themselves. This roundtable brings together four such individuals from around the world who have successfully made the transition from working as line officers and leaders in the criminal justice system to faculty members and leaders in higher education. They will discuss paths taken, obstacles encountered, and tips for success for others seeking to transition.

Fitchburg State University Police Academy: Integrating Undergraduate Education and Police Training
Fitchburg State University and the Municipal Police Training Committee began an innovative approach to police recruit training in 2016. FSU created a partnership with MPTC to establish the Police Program within the Criminal Justice Program to launch the FSU Police Academy. FSU and MPTC recognized the literature that suggests educated police officers are better equipped to address community needs. Our presentations will describe the FSU Police Academy, the integration of Academy and academic curriculum, the results of a pilot evaluation, and the experiences of one alumnus of the program to provide a comprehensive overview of the program and its effectiveness.
